Psoriasis of the scalp
Question:
> Hi Jen. You aren’t alone. It works for me too. And yes, it IS psoriasis. This > person is obviously someone who doesn’t know that what works for one (or 2) > people may not work for others.
Missy, I do understand your concern, I don’t believe in witch craft or magic and trust in science. Even Head and Shoulders says it does nothing for Psoriasis! It’s geared for dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. The source of dandruff is a fungus called Malassezia. H&S uses a Pyrithione Zinc formula.
Response:
Actually it’s not just your scalp that gets more sensitive to the sun after using a tar shampoo. It’s your whole body!
Response:
I’ve been using Extra Strength T-Gel. It has a pretty high concentration of Tar compared to the other Tar shampoos. I put it on my scalp about 1/2 hour before I go to take a shower. Then I wash my hair with a regular shampoo so I don’t smell like tar. I have also been sporadically using kenalog spray on my scalp. These 2 things seem to be working for the moment.
Response:
Dude- you really annoy me. Maybe you and my dermatologist should get together and debate what I have. He seems pretty sure that I have P in my head. I had it along the hair line as well as in my hair. I also get it above my ears. I’m sure this does not work for everyone. But it does work for me. I tried the all the products my derm gave me including the foam and nothing really worked. This works–for Me. Jen

Dudette, Like I said before I’m sorry I upset you so much. But I’m only speaking the facts. Head and Shoulders does nothing for Psoriasis medically! Could be that the area on your head was going into remission at the time you used it. Many things can help start this like, less stress, even the thought of a new treatment(H&S). Keep using it and see how long you stay in remission. Or better yet stop using it to see if your Psoriasis returns right away, then use it again to see if it actually clears it. Just to make it scientific. If not you might as well say you saw a crow passing by the day you went into remission and that’s what caused it. :)

I know this will sound nuts, but I do this frequently. I have about 90% to 95% coverage in scalp. I’ve used everything from Dermasoothe to coal tars of various types and strenghts. I used dovonex lotion as well. It’s ALL expensive when it comes to RX’s…however…I have found that if I use BABYOIL, believe it or not, it helps. How I do it is find a small squeeze bottle to pour the oil in. I use just a little of the oil to get it all over the scalp only (it is messy but it’s worth it) and then I usually rub it in and do this several times in one evening when I know I’m not going anywhere. I sleep with either a shower cap, or a couple old towels down to protect the sheets/pillows. The next morning, I use T-Gel shampoo and let it lather up and sit there for at least 5 minutes before rinsing well. When it’s really bad, I mix a little of the dovonex lotion in the oil first, but typically just plain is fine. It clears me up completely for at least 2-3 days. Then it starts to come back, but once or twice a month is all I need to do this for mostly trouble free scalp issues. I hope this will help you. Mary

Jen, Head and Shoulders does nothing for Psoriasis. Maybe you don’t have Psoriasis in your scalp or you are just not having a break out when you do use Head and Shoulders. The ingredients in Head and Shoulders have been proven to not do a thing for Psoriasis. It’s for dandruff not Psoriasis! Very different problems.

Coal Tar has been proven to help with Psoriasis. But it really needs to be on the scalp longer than a the instructions for a shower say. You should keep it on your scalp around 15 minutes to 30 minutes, to allow it to soak in. Don’t use it every day though, as it increases your chance of sunburn for up to 24 hours.

I can attest to that! My hair parts in the middle and I had a red line down the whole top of my scalp. Ouch! Linda from Michigan Remove "nojunk" from my address to send email.

Hi Loren. I used Pentrex shampoo. It has the highest amount of coal tar from what I understand. If you are persistent and do it every day for 2 weeks you should see some improvement. The other thing that also helped me a lot is Derma-Smoothe. It is a prescription. I think it’s about $30 without insurance. This really works well too. I had about 90% coverage on my scalp. I used this for 2 weeks and my scalp went to about 5% coverage. Good luck.

Hi everyone. The most wonderful thing happened to me. I have been on mtx for three months and allhough my lower limbs are being resistant to the treatment, my scalp is clear. Last night I slept on navy blue sheets and pillow cases and woke up this morning with nothing on my pillow and sheet. What a great feeling. Now if the lower legs would go into remission. That’s great, Loretta! And don’t forget, you’ve only been on it for a short time now. I continued to get clearing for years later, and yes, one of the very last spots to clear was on my shin. I still have a couple of tiny ones around the toenails, but that’s nothing. :) I think most everybody has similar experiences of the legs being the last to clear, but they DO clear eventually. A little MG-217 ointment helped the clearing for me as well. (that’s an over-the-counter coal tar ointment, texture like vaseline, but with the distinctive smell and color of coal tar added) Best regards,

Hi Ronetta, I am so happy that the MTX is working for you. A word to the wise, I was on MTX for about a year and a half with wonderful results like you (including the scalp) However, I got rather lazy about refilling the prescriptions and forgetting to take the pills and after several weeks the P came back two fold!!!!!! Then the MTX wouldn’t work at all.
anyway, I finally have talked my Derm into starting me on Soriatane as she won’t put me back on MTX again. (very conservative). i miss the days of being clear and not itching my scalp. Good luck with yours and don’t miss a dose. Good Luck, Pat Before you buy.

I took John’s advice and tried the head and shoulders soak. I used a generic version of H&S. Rubbed it on dry scalp, used a little water to get it spread. Left on 10 to 30 min. depending on what else I had to do. For the first month I had to do it every day or I had itching in the evening. Using another of the mentioned shampoos led to itching, too. Now after two months I don’t have to "soak" every day but do every few days and use the shampoo every day. For irritated skin, try the oil treatment, olive oil or vit. E oil from a capsule or a bottle. I’ve never had this heal the psoriasis but it might tame it some so the shampoo won’t hurt. After the soak and shampoo it’s helpful to rub hair conditioner into your scalp, helps with dryness of the scalp and the hair. Good luck! Details, must have details,
Would you try to describe the before and after condition of your scalp for me. I take it that the H&S has reduced itching. Any other changes? I am now spraying a little salt solution on my hair, just after toweling off, and this has allowed me to stretch the H&S soaks out to about once a month before itching and flakes come back a little. Hi Tea Tree is one of the few essential oils you an use neat on the skin (Lavender can also be used neat). However, you should do a small patch test first to ensure you don’t have any adverse reaction. If you find it a little strong in it’s neat form, try mixing it in a seperate bottle with an equal amount of any carrier oil – sweet almond, apricot kernal, coconut, grapeseed, hazlenut, sunflower etc. You can even mix with petroleum jelly (Vaseline) if you like. The usual rule for mixing essential oils is a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 10 drops per 10mls of carrier oil but the average is 6 drops. This rule doesn’t apply to Tea Tree but if you decide to add other oils – I add a little Lavender, Cajaput & Myrrh – make sure you follow this rule. IMPORTANT: Essential oils should be used only with the consent of a medical practitioner if you are pregnant. Good Luck!! Suzie

Hello, I’ve been reading this newsgroup for a few days. I think I have scalp-P. I am not sure because I didn’t go and see a physician, but after reading about the symptons and seeing a picture of scalp-P on the net I am pretty sure that that is what I’ve got. I discovered my skin condition several months ago, but by now it has almost completely cleared up. I did two things, and I’m not quite sure which of two caused the improvement. – I take vitamins A and D3 daily (oraly), about 400 microgram A and about 10 microgram D3. – I put salt (ordinary sodium chloride) on my head, also daily. What I do is I make my hair wet, I mix some salt with water, not to much so that it doesn’t disolve but just enough so that it sticks together, and I rub the salt on the infected area’s of my scalp. I leave it there for about 5 to 10 minutes and then I take the salt off. My skin started to clear almost immediately, and after three weeks almost all the scales where gone. That was about 2 months ago, but I still take the vitamins and apply the salt. I don’t dare stop, in case the scalp-P should come back. Comments anyone? Inga

I would hesitate to ask you to do anything that would do you any harm, but if I were you, I would be curious as to what in this combination of treatments were the key to my success. I think that you could eliminate one of the items at a time on ome month intervals, say, and keep a very close eye on your skin for any warnings of reoccurrence. This way, you not only might simplify your preventive treatment, you might find that no treatment was necessary for a long time. I am an incurable experimenter and would want to know what had worked. But regardless of your future plans, I thank you for providing us with this information. John Popelish

I use essential oils quite a lot but I’ve found that they only soothe my skin rather than actually clear up any patches of P. Tea tree oil is excellent for putting on sore areas – it really really soothes. It’s also mild enough to use neat and costs very little. You can also add it to your favourite shampoo/conditioner if you like. Lavender and chamomile can also be very helpful. If you’re interested in the use of essential oils a book called "The Fragrant Pharmacy" by Valerie Ann Worwood is brilliant (I’m not on commission!!), It was recommended to me by an aromatherapy teacher/practitioner. If your scalp is very dry, gently massage in a little olive oil before washing your hair – it softens the scalp & conditions your hair too! Hope this helps Suzie – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >What can I do to clear up a mild case of psoriasis on my scalp? is tea tree >oil any good? are there any other oils that I can use?

The first thing to try is something simple like dandruff shampoo. I suggest you try Nizoral, T-Gel and Head and Shoulders blue (in no particular order (or any that has worked somewhat in the past). You can increase the effectiveness of all these by smearing a layer on your scalp and waiting a while (5 to 30 minutes, depending on your skin sensitivity) before showering it off. None of these products does anything useful on your hair or the surface of your scalp. Only when they soak in a little and work below the surface do they become effective, if at all. Some people find more effect by alternating or rotating through these, on subsequent days. These medications do not cure psoriasis, but they help many, and who knows what they will do for you till you try. Good luck to you. John Popelish
