Hey, didja see the news item a few days ago, about a new topical that saves people’s hair when they undergo chemotherapy? It works BY SLOWING DOWN CELL REPLICATION! It may be specific to the hair follicle cells that the chemo would otherwise kill, but the moment I heard the report, of course I thought about trying it (or something similar) for p! J.

Hmm.. interesting lead. It seems that all the psoriasis treatments stem from second uses for drugs developed for some other reason. I think that the pathogenesis of psoriasis is sufficiently complex that many potential angles of attack exist. I also like the amount of research around Endostaten, et al. This anti-angiogenisis knowledge may have some applicability to our lot. Steroids, after all, work their magic by constricting the capillaries that feed the overactive psoriasis. It may be long into the future, but knowledge is power. tim

Well, the steroids reduce the immune response overall (locally), constricting the capillaries is just one part of it, as I understand things. – Dave W. http://members.aol.com/psorsite/

>Ahh, Tim can I ask what PVAC is?
I wouldn’t be the one to ask, but to my understanding, PVAC is the name given to one of Corixa’s engineered proteins. Basically they manipulated some organism to produce a protein identical/similar to one that is used to guide our immune system. then they concentrate the stuff (and kill the manufacturing organism) and put it in us. The idea is that the overacting immune response can be slowed/stopped by selectively interfering with the chain of communication. It seems logical that this *selective* slowdown of one part of the immune system may be a whole lot better than the shotgun approach of MTX or Cyclosporine (NEORAL). I can buy into this to some extent. If at the least PVAC has the same immune system dangers as MTX, but with no liver toxicity, it will be a great progress. The recently approved miracle arthritis drug Enbrel has a similar model of action, albeit the method of manufacture differs.I think that it was this whole class of medications that prompted Dr. Joe’s optimism last year when he said it would be great to see us all getting well. That may seem too optimistic, but I think there is a lot of promise, especially with the success of Enbrel. There are way better links out there, but I’ve long since lost them. Here are the "official" self glossing company links. Corixa’s spin on it: http://www.corixa.com/trials/autoimmune/pvac.htm past newsgroup "discussions" http://www.pinch.com/skinny?deja=pvac Biogen’s spin on LFA3TIP (Amvive) http://www.biogen.com/index2.html

No, I think the "vaccine" moniker refers to the mechanism by which the treatment elicits an immune response, as opposed to the common notion that vaccines are permanent. Tetanus shots come to mind (every 5 years) as well as boosters for measlse/mumps/reubella. tim

At this point 2 shots only are scheduled. Some in the Phase I test have been over a year with no reoccurrence. I’m sure the jury is still out on what time element is involved. You can read Corixa’s explanation and compare to other type shots being tested. You will see that PVAC is a different approach. BTW, I attended the NPF education meeting in Houston yesterday. It was most informative and great speakers. After hearing some of the stuff about NPF in this NG, I was very pleasantly surprised. I highly recommend that you try to attend one of these meetings. By the way, that <g> means I was grinning ear to ear when I wrote that. tim
Response:
Sorry I misunderstood, tim. I’ll advise you as changes occur and the ultimate results. I understand that after the next 5 weeks observation and blood tests, I’ll be advised which strength dose I received, whether 5mg, 50 mg, 200 mg or only the placebo. In the event we receive the placebo or the psoriasis has not responded after the last Week 12 observation, we will be given the PVAC on an open-label study. Maurice

No, by all means post thrice daily. These are my favorite threads because it reminds me that new options are at least possible. The thought of coal tar UVB and MTX when I’m 85 is not pleasant. I’d much rather deal with this in 5 year increments of hope/denial/resolve.
Currently this PVAC/Amvive recombinant stuff is the basis of my active fantasy, and post like yours nurture it!! Keep up the posts! tim

Three weeks have passed since my 2nd and final shot of the PVAC Phase II test. The current condition of my psoriasis is very much better than before. I have had no side effects other than a small rash one day, then very obvious improvement of the "P" the next. The past 3 days has seen my "P" become considerably better. The redness has diminished very noticeably. The constant itching of my lower legs has practically ceased and I’m using only a moisturizer. If the progress continues over the last 6 weeks of the control observation and blood tests, I feel that what we all dream of and pray for may result. I’ll post when another significant development occurs.

Hi Maurice, That is terrific news! I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you (and the rest of us!) in hopes that you continue to do well. Thanks for the update! Janet

Maurice, I won’t second guess Tim’s intent, but I took it to mean the more good news, the better. Lord knows we don’t get that much of it! Janet

Ditto Janet’s statement! But, if things take a turn for the worse, be sure to post that info also. It might not be what many of us want to hear, but worth the telling just the same. Wishing you continued success, The other Tim Cheers Tim http://hometown.aol.com/nesielheum/

Good point, Tim. I guess I just didn’t want to think about *that* side of it!
