Easy, Tim. No such accusation was made. Elizabeth correctly guessed that the source of the mystatin/vaseline theme was Ken Kessler. Presumably, you paid him money for his personal medical file. I saw your original post, and also realized the source. The way you presented it was perfectly valid, and I was curious to see if anyone would testify to any success. If I had posted the link to my review of the method, I might have "intimidated" someone from responding. My guess is that killing off fungus topically might be beneficial if you either have a fungal infection, or your psoriasis is triggered by a fungal infection. In the past discussions of this topic in the group, I don’t recall anyone mentioning success. Please search the archive for yourself. You will find shortcut search links from my Psoriasis Hall of PShame page: http://www.pinch.com/skin/pshame.html#kessler The problem is not the relatively innocuous use of topical antibiotics, but the way it is hyped as a secret, unspecified cure. You only find out the method if send in money. As you found, Ken is more interested in getting your cash than in helping your condition. You might be better off buying his booklet on how to pick winning lottery numbers. His claims of having a patent for a psoriasis cure are just as valid as his claims of FDA approval or having a trademark on "Real Numbers" or his library of congress registration and copyrights. None of those exist at all. Sorry if you lost $15. I’ve tried to warn folks by disclosing his methods. — Ed "feminine hygeine goop is easier to obtain" Anderson

Response:

I did not explain myself in my original post. I took Nystatin orally as directed by my derm. I did not get Ken any of my money for I seen what he was from the get go. I misunderstood what was being said and I am sorry for that. But I still think Kessler is a low life. Tim

I tried it and it did not work for me. Seems like I can say that about everything. About fifteen years ago I took it orally and saw no changes. — To e-mail me replace "spamsucks" with "azstarnet.com"

I tried it some years ago, with the same result–or lack thereof. Terry — Legitimate e-mailers (not spammers) should remove the "spamsucks" and replace it with "azstarnet" in my address.

Over the last couple years I’ve posted this a few times: Nystatin: It does something.  Is it the cure? No.  Is it worth trying?  Yes. A few years ago a friend at work who goes to psoriasis support group meetings told me about somebody who had talked about a non-yeast forming diet.  I can’t remember how I tracked down his phone number but I did end up talking to the guy.  He told me about his experience of successfully controlling the psoriasis that he had had on the hands, by eliminating yeast producing foods.  His diet was radical but he said as soon as he broke it he would see the psoriasis.   He recommended the book, The Yeast Connection.  I found a copy of it in the library and there was a small reference to an anti-yeast drug helping psoriasis.  A doctor was prescribing a drug, nystatin, to control psoriasis.   I was able to get my doctor to prescribe that for me.  Apparently nystatin is a very mild, relatively benign anti-yeast drug, with few side affects.  I started taking it and in about a week I noticed that my psoriasis was definitely different.  Maybe not better, but different.  Instead of little pieces of skin coming off, the skin came off in sheets that were often 10mm long.  The skin also felt softer.   I was planning a trip to the tropics and in preparation started using a tanning both a few weeks after starting nystatin.  I noticed my skin getting better.  I continued using nystatin while on vacation and my psoriasis completely cleared with the sun and surf.   For years I’ve experienced that sun helps, but I had never before seen the rate of improvement that I saw that time with nystatin.    During the trip I stopped taking the nystatin.  I don’t know why.  When I returned home to the cold the psoriasis began to come back.  I started taking nystatin again, and while I saw the change of quality of the flaking, I didn’t see my psoriasis go away again. I’ve tried it again since then but without the tanning salon.  It does something but alone it doesn’t get rid of the psoriasis.   It may be worth a try for somebody.   Addendum: Last summer I tried it again with a very small amount of PUVA  (about 8 sessions) , and it worked very well.  I am sure that it worked much better than PUVA alone. Eventually it stopped working but it  is was got me through the torture of stopping Skin Cap.   Go for it, Steve

Hi, I was just wondering how much people have paid for the Nystatin powder?  My doctor has told me he is willing to let me try it, since it is very safe. The problem is that the powder seems very expensive.  The dosage I see alot is about 500,000 units of nystatin 3 to 4 times a day.  I called a pharmacy and they had 15grams of the powder for $30.  I was told that 1 gram = 100,000 units.  Obviously I’ve got something wrong here because at this rate it would cost $30 a day, and I’ve heard some people take it for months. If you have any idea how much your Nystatin powder cost, or where my logic went wrong in figuring out the dosage, I’d really appreciate the help, thanks in advance, –M Riggs

Hi… I thought I had taken every med out there…..What is Nystatin and what is it for?  Very curious!!!!!   Hope your day is good! Lisa

Response:

I have taken Nystatin tablets for yeast before, but not powder.  It was very effective and from what I remember it was really cheap – so I don’t know why the powder would be so expensive. Kelly

I was prescribed it once along with antibiotics to prevent a yeast infection. I sometimes forget to ask or some doctors don’t want to give it up, I wonder why? — HappyJoy ; (semi-colon) http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/5168/crohns

I’ve used Nystatin powder around my stoma when I had a yeast infection. As a perscription drug it was covered by my health insurance and all I paid was the $9 co-pay under my policy. Barbara Skoglund

Response:

I take it orally to deal with my intestinal flora.  I get 1,000,000 capsules of it — $60 for a bottle of 100, which is a 17-day supply for me at 6 caps/day. So that’s about $4/day on more than double your dose. When I had my temporary ileostomy, I needed some of it in powder form for a little skin yeast infection and I recall that little bottle being in the $30-$50 range.  But that was for little spritzes onto the skin.  (Could someone with yeast on the skin save a fortune by using stuff from the capsules?  I dunno.) The doctor that prescribed it to me told me that it was extremely safe. Nystatin kills candida very effectively.  When it’s taken orally, I don’t believe it’s absorbed from the digestive tract. Jan…

Response:

For some reason Nystatin powder costs a lot more than the pills.  If you can tolerate taking the pill form (which for me causes more stomach upset) that’s the cheapest.  I like the powder in capsule form, though taking the powder loose has the advantage of working in the mouth and throat, where the pills and capsules don’t work until they dissolve in the stomach. I get Nystatin powder in capsules from Wellness Health in Birmingham, Alabama.  My last prescription for 1 million units of Nystatin powder in capsules cost $119 plus shipping for #250 capsules.  This is still pretty expensive but better than the price you quoted.  Their phone number is 1-800-227-2627.  Other "compounding" pharmacies can probably fill the prescription for a similar cost. I hope this helps. Arnold
