Dithranol

Question:

Did bugger all except stain everything it came in contact with. In order of success (best to worst), I would go with Elocon, Diprosone, Daivonex/Devonex, and Dithranol. The gap between 3rd and 4th, though, is l-o-o-o-o-ng.

Response:

Hi Having had psoriasis for ver 20 years I can say that (in my opinion) dithranol is a very effective treatment – second only to having a two to three week holiday somewhere very sunny. The obvious problem with dithranol is the staining of virtually anything that the product comes into contact with. For this reason I only use it when the condition worsens. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Hi >Has anyone experienced Dithranol treatment for Psoriasis? Hi Has anyone experienced Dithranol treatment for Psoriasis? I have been prescribed this treatment by my dermatologist.

Response:

I used it several years ago with littly success – for me.  Others report good results. Good luck Irv—>in Alabama

Response:

Tried it and it was effective for a while after I completed the treatment. However, take it steady with the strengths as it caused me a lot of redness – not painful but fairly long lasting. I stopped it eventually and switched to Dovonex which goes through phases of being effective and not effective (probably related to seasons). Oliver

My current, and most effective treatment. I’ve been meaning to write up a web page to summarize, but you’re welcome to browse my past posts. It’s generally called anthralin here in the colonies, so you’ll find more hits if you search on that.  See: http://www.pinch.com/skinny?deja=anthralin|dithranol|dritho*  (lots more) I use the weakest form available to me, 0.1% drithocreme. I rub it in, which prevents any staining of clothing. It’s VERY quick and effective for my face and genitals, too, although that’s not a recommended use. Reason being, that much stronger creams for short contact (SCAT) therapy can be very irritating. No odor, color, steroids, rebound, toxicity, etc. It’s a pro-oxidant. Untested for teratogenicity in preganant women, but no reports, either. I wish it worked for everyone as well as it works for me. — Ed "glad for an excuse to go on about it" Anderson

Hi Martyn- Yup, not as commonly used as some other things, but certainly some people have had success with it. Also one of the lowest risk conventional treatments available. Only real side effects are possible staining and irritation (be careful about how long you leave it on, especially at first). You can find more reports in the ng searchable archives at http://www.pinch.com Dithranol is also known as anthralin, and you’d probably get more searching under that name: http://www.pinch.com/skinny?deja=anthralin I think will lead you straight to the selected items, but if I messed it up you can go to Pinch and follow instructions to search. Ed A, who maintains the ng archives at Pinch is one of the ng successful users of anthralin, BTW. -Kim
