P fingernail treatments?
Question:
puva treatments work for my nail P gary
Response:
I have really severe nail p. I know from some of your previous posts that you are a fan of EPO. So, based on your success I am willing to give it a try but have some questions for you before I do. Does the EPO have any drug interactions? Is there anything that you should avoid eating while taking it? If you take 2 capsules do you take them both at the same time or 12 hours apart? Are there any negative side effects? Thanks for your input.

Evening primrose oil (EPO) is basically salad oil, like safflower oil or sunflower oil or corn oil, you could even make salad dressing with it if you were so inclined. However, EPO has one unusual fatty acid, GLA, which appears to be its active ingredient – which is also available in black currant oil or borage oil, btw. Normally, the body is expected to make its own GLA from LA, but this can be blocked by other fats, alcohol, various other factors. Which is to say that it’s pretty innocuous stuff. * I do not know of any drugs that are affected by your taking EPO. * However, aspirin and steroids will block EPO. I know that EPO dramatically reduces the bleeding I get from psoriasis. If I take an aspirin, this benefit vanishes in about six hours, and takes about two days to reestablish. I seldom use steroids so don’t have any anecdotes about that. I *assume* that aspirin and cortisone would also block whatever the effect is from EPO to the nails. * I would recommend capsule in the AM and one in the PM, but it may not matter. Others have tried EPO for general improvement of psoriasis and take far more, btw. Also, if you ask at the local health food store, they have traditionally sold EPO for "women’s problems" and usually recommend 3000mg/day or more. * No negative side effects as such. However, only 10% or so of EPO is the beneficial GLA, the rest is just plain salad oil, which is an omega-6 oil which is something you probably already have too much of in your diet, and may itself contribute to psoriasis. To make up for it, put a little less dressing on your next salad, or don’t supersize your fries at lunch! * It can also be very soothing topically, btw, it’s often used in fancy cosmetic products. I never tried it topically on the nails, but who knows. * BTW, for me, if you figure how long it takes for new nail to grow far enough to become visible, the calculations suggest that EPO starts the clear nail growing pretty much immediately! * FYI, I’ve mostly used the EPO from Trader Joe’s, and a couple of times one of the commercial brands, Nature’s Life or something. Both come straight, no other ingredients. EPO is also available mixed with vitamin E, supposedly to help keep it fresh. All I know is that I tried a store brand with the vitamin E added (it was on sale), and it did not seem nearly as effective. * Your mileage may vary. However, this is the one thing I have found that, for me, provides dramatic improvement and has continued to do so for several years now. J.

Something I learned about here, the only significant clearing I’ve ever gotten from my psoriasis, is evening primrose oil (EPO). Take one or two 500mg capsules per day, and wait for clear new nail to grow in — it takes several weeks before you see the first clear nail, and then it takes another month or two before it’s all grown out clear. Available at a drug store or nutrition counter near you. If you’re somewhere with a Trader Joe’s store, they have good stuff, cheap. Others on the group have tried it, with some successes, others, not. It clears my nails and keeps them clear, but sadly, does not clear my psoriasis elsewhere — though it does sooth it a bit and reduce bleeding. I don’t know what the association with guttate is, tho, I’m a plaque person myself. Good luck! J.
